Un detective anonimo, in una città senza nome, alla ricerca di un ricattatore senza volto. Queste le premesse della nuova avventura noir di Alessandro Marchetti, ventiseienne scrittore opitergino, che proprio con questo genere, in compagnia del detective Robert Dern, aveva esordito nel 2006 con il romanzo breve Rosso fuoco. L’indefinitezza dei luoghi e del tempo in cui la storia è ambientata, la velocità degli avvenimenti, la forte presenza di dialoghi ironici e pungenti, il taglio cinematografico della narrazione, questa volta fornito non dalla colonna sonora, allegata in cd a “Rosso fuoco”, ma dalle illustrazioni simili a degli storyboard dell’illustratrice Alberta Tessarolo, continuano a caratterizzare il mondo letterario dell’autore. Con i numerosi colpi di scena e la realistica durezza di situazioni e personaggi tipica dell’hard-boiled, La terza rata era di troppo vuole essere un rispettoso omaggio ai grandi scrittori noir degli anni ’30 e ’40.

Quando poco più di un anno fa Amazon lanciò Kindle non si sarebbe mai immaginata un successo così straordinario, 240mila lettori venduti nei primi 9 mesi di vita danno un’idea piuttosto chiara di come gli acquirenti abbiano reagito alla novità.
Per questo motivo -e per i meravigliosi profitti che hanno fatto ascendere in borsa i titoli di Amazon- oggi vediamo la nascita di Kindle 2, evoluzione e perfezionamento del già ben piazzato fratello minore di prima generazione.

I’ve been discussing movie posters and album covers for the past two and a half and two years respectively – first on Unzipped and now here on The FontFeed. Yet book covers only have been covered (lame pun, I know – it’s past midnight here!) sporadically, mostly when reporting awards and online galleries. Stephen on his part recently did a very popular entry on the Book, Jacket & Journal Show.
There have been moments I’ve considered starting with a regular book cover section, but I don’t think that’s realistic. These type of reviews take a hell of a lot of time to write – posters/covers have to be assembled, inserted in the post, links to the respective movie/artist websites added, then I have to study them, and write something that makes a modicum of sense. I already have to occasionally skip a month for Screenfonts and My Type of Music, so it’s safe to say a Book Faces column would only make matters worse.
Excellence in book cover design
Fortunately there are a number of places on the internet that showcase book covers and offer insightful information about this (commercial) art. Last Thursday a new and valuable resource was added – The Book Cover Archive was launched, “for the appreciation and categorization of excellence in book cover design”.

Un passo decisivo per la lettura digitale sul dispositivo della Mela. Alcuni tra i principali bestseller del fantasy angloamericano potranno essere scaricati e letti dal 24 dicembre attraverso l’iPhone. Tra questi “Twilight” di Stephenie Meyer, ”Brisingr” di Christopher Paolini, la trilogia ”Queste oscure materie” di Philip Pullman e ‘Shadow Country” di Peter Matthiessen.
L’annuncio arriva in seguito alla presentazione da parte di ScrollMotion di Iceberg, la nuova applicazione per iPhone, attraverso la quale sarà possibile fruire i titoli di alcuni importanti editori come Random House, Hachette, Penguin, Counterpoint, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt e Simon & Schuster.
Se da un lato la nuova applicazione garantisce una gradevole esperienza di lettura, grazie allo scrolling, alla possibilità di sfogliare le pagine e di inserire note, dall’altro il prezzo di vendita degli ebook è simile se non superiore alla versione cartacea. Una nota negativa non da poco, se si considera che i prezzi praticati da Amazon per il Kindle sono di gran lunga inferiori.

A plucker ebook is generated from the HTML file if there is one, else from the Plain Text file. If the source file is a Plain Text file, the program must guess at the structure of the text. Thus plucker files may contain formatting errors like verse lines run together or paragraphs wrongfully marked as headers etc. They are good enough for reading though.
Our plucker ebooks do not contain images.
You may also install the plucker distiller software and generate plucker ebooks yourself. This gives you control over more options, like including images, etc.
